A science teacher’s presentation of scientific numbers
How a science teacher presents scientific numbers – presented by a young energetic science teacher. Could either show the video or “borrow” the ideas on showing mass of the sun and mass of a proton as your lesson hook. Good question at the end for students to work out.
Investigating Scientific Notation
An investigation of some real objects using Wolfram Alpha. The worksheets formed the basis of the investigation looking at the mass of a grain of rice, the diameter of the earth, the speed of light and the distance to Proxima Centauri (the star closest to earth).
Powers of Ten
Powers of Ten takes us on an adventure in magnitudes. Starting at a picnic by the lakeside in Chicago, this famous film transports us to the outer edges of the universe. Every ten seconds we view the starting point from ten times farther out until our own galaxy is visible only a s a speck of light among many others. Returning to Earth with breathtaking speed, we move inward- into the hand of the sleeping picnicker- with ten times more magnification every ten seconds. Our journey ends inside a proton of a carbon atom within a DNA molecule in a white blood cell.
Scientific Notation
Practice converting between scientific notation and normal numbers. Try Addition/Subtraction and Multiplication/Division problems. Quiz yourself!
Scientific Notation - Ignite Learning
Introduce scientific notation for describing numbers and concepts from the infinitesimal to the seemingly infinite.
The Scale of the Universe
Zoom from the edge of the universe to the quantum foam of spacetime and learn the scale of things along the way!
The Scale of the Universe 2
Zoom out to the size of the observable universe, zoom in to Planck Length.
